About Us
Moray Firth Radio hosts the charity Moray Firth Media Trust and the 'Radioskills' project. MFR has over 24 years of experience in training people and managing volunteers and is well known within the radio sector for this work. MFR set up the charity in 1999 to ensure that its training initiative could take forward its ambitious plans to provide quality a training course and a recognised certification.
MFR has worked in partnership with Moray Firth Media Trust and its sponsors to develop the training as a community service for nine years. The course is based within the radio station and is an integral part of station life.
Three successive Managing Directors have supported the partnership of MFR and MFMT; without this relationship the project could not exist.
We have received wide support and positive recognition about the project from a range of organisations including the LEC network, HIE, MPs, MSPs and Skillset for example.
Key points of interest:
We have initiated
* a new customised award, the Certificate in Radio Broadcasting
* a range of new radio broadcasting courses to a wide variety of clients; media courses, introductory courses, Gaelic broadcasting, radio skills for schools to name a few
We have developed
*a new and unique training infrastructure model within the station
*new broadcasters
*new trainers, coaches, assessors, internal verifiers
*new course materials
We draw on the expertise of the staff within the radio station and work with them to develop their skills as trainers, assessors and so on. This adds value to the work of the local radio station through enhanced community coverage.
Principally, we deliver learning and work activity opportunities in commercial radio production to new entrants to the radio industry.
We have worked with community and hospital radio across the Highlands and Islands delivering free training courses to them in Inverness and in situ. We have worked closely with IslesFm to taken one presenter through the Certificate in Radio Broadcasting.
We have developed an online facility providing a learning resource and online assessment for candidates. This has been a valuable resource in an industry which relies on advanced ICT and the spoken word.
Over 90% of VQ course completers move into sustainable employment or college; many move into radio or media related work. Those who have completed workshops provide positive feedback - increased understanding of the media, more able to use the media to good effect in their daily life, improved employability, better career prospects.
We have delivered other projects to secondary school pupils in the highlands. In 2005 we delivered a very successful Radio Skills for Schools project which showed the talent and potential we have in Highland schools.
Likewise community radio and hospital radio have benefited from free training and support; courses in Inverness and delivered in situ by our trainers.
We are able to tailor training to suit individual training for trainees; engineers and broadcast journalists for example. These are skill shortage areas.
We focus on achieving positive outcomes for all who complete the course, working with people individually to support them.
The trainee on-air activity ensures that more community and cultural content is covered and in more depth at MFR.
